Are streets for cars or people? As the environmental, social and equity impacts of the private car on cities are better understood, a complete streets approach, which provides an alternative to car-oriented planning and design is spreading. Nowhere is the global growth of complete streets better illustrated than in car-choked Delhi, where the state government announced new designs and a range of other pedestrian improvements on 1,200 km of road. The rise of complete streets, which accommodate the needs of a diversity of users, has been accompanied by a range of valuable new publications and resources, which the Victoria Transportation Policy Institute‘s Todd Litman details in a  Planetizen article. These are important steps to re-focusing our view of streets, from car sewers to valuable public spaces.
